After opening the season with three losses, the Montevideo Spartans amateur baseball team notched its first victory with a 7-3 win over the Appleton A’s Saturday at Appleton.

Travis Epema pitched into the ninth inning to get the win, and Cameron Vien became the first Montevideo amateur player to hit a home run since the original Spartans disbanded following the 1988 season.

Vien also doubled and singled and drove in three runs for Montevideo as seven Spartans players combined to bang out 12 hits.

In addition to going 8 1/3 innings to get the win, Epema went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and RBI. Joe Schlagel was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.

“Travis Epema gave us the outing we needed out of him,” said Spartans manager Brandon Raymo. “He kept the hitters off balance while getting solid defense behind him.”

The Spartans will play the Dumont Saints Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wheaton. Montevideo will host the Rosen Express Sunday at 2 p.m. Both are Land O’ Ducks League games.
