Winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour pretty much grounded any semblance of a passing attack in Tuesday’s Section 3AAA playoff game between Montevideo and Glencoe-Silver Lake.

That didn’t bother Glencoe-Silver Lake too much. They simply ran the ball, and ran, and ran.

The Panthers, who have won five state championships in the past decade, scored a 49-12 win over Montevideo.

Glencoe-Silver Lake, the No. 2 seed in the section behind Dassel-Cokato, took control early with Ethan Maass returning the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.

The Panthers used their powerful wishbone offense to drive 71 yards, capped by quarterback Kyler Anderson’s 25-yard run.

A 76-yard scoring run by Colt Trebesch gave the Panthers a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Glencoe-Silver Lake scored on its first six possessions to lead 42-0 at halftime. The Panthers defense held Montevideo without a first down and to just 14 yards of offense in the first half.

The Panthers scored on their first play of the second half on an 82-yard run by Trevor Lueders before their starters spent the rest of the night on the bench.

The Thunder Hawks drove 72 yards for their first score late in the third quarter, with Logan Ackerman scoring from 4 yards out.

Joe Bednar scored on a 12-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to make the final score 49-12.

The weather and GSL’s defense took away much of what Montevideo hoped to accomplish on offense.

“Not being able to pass the ball took away some of what we wanted to do on offense,” said Montevideo coach Dave Vik. “I’ve never seen (weather) conditions like that. Thank goodness it wasn’t raining.”
