  • Darek Jon Nelson, 24, of Montevideo, made his first appearance in Chippewa County District Court in Montevideo on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Nelson is being held on $750,000 bail, charged with the fatal stabbing on Jan. 13 of Vinessa Victoria Lozano, 18, also of Montevideo.
Nelson faces charges of murder in the second degree, manslaughter in the first degree, and two counts of assault in the second degree (the first on Lozano and the second on Daniel O’Malley, a Pizza Ranch co-worker who attempted to come to Lozano’s aid during the alleged assault).
According to the complaint filed in District Court, Nelson said, following his arrest, Lozano was “the second dearest person to me.”
The complaint went on to state that Nelson stated that he first thought about killing Lozano the night of  Jan. 8, and over the course of the next few days, made a plan that he would bring his hunting knife to work on Friday, and if she treated him badly, he was going to kill her.
Funeral services for Lozano will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Community Bible Church in Montevideo. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church.
