  • Minnesota’s Democrat-Farmer-Labor (DFL) and Republican party faithful held their precinct caucuses on Tuesday evening.
In Chippewa County, there was a large Republican party gathering at the Montevideo Community Center. The turnout of 117 party members was the largest in many years, according to county party chairman Larry Smith. The heavy turnout was not surprising since this is a presidential election year with four Republican candidates still vying for the party’s nomination.
Rick Santorum received 40 straw poll votes, followed by Ron Paul with 37, Mitt Romney 24 and Newt Gingrich 16. These percentages were fairly consistent with statewide numbers, which also favored Santorum.
Chippewa County DFL-ers met at Montevideo High School, with about 35 party members attending. The lighter DFL turnout is arguably attributable to the fact that President Barack Obama is seeking re-election.
