  • It looks like a bad sign to me

  • For several years I’ve really disliked how our two-party system has become more and more volatile. From extremists on either side of the fence assuming their rivals are dumb for disagreeing, to political gridlock becoming a greater and greater issue in recent years, I wonder how long it will be until something actually changes.

  • For several years I’ve really disliked how our two-party system has become more and more volatile. From extremists on either side of the fence assuming their rivals are dumb for disagreeing, to political gridlock becoming a greater and greater issue in recent years, I wonder how long it will be until something actually changes.
The change is more than six years away, if Sen. Olympia J. Snowe of Maine is to be believed, and looking at how the current Republican debate is really just a fight to be the most conservative I think I believe her.
The Republican senator has recently declined to seek a fourth term because she’s fed up with political partisanship, and I can hardly blame her. It is a shame, though, to see a strong, moderate Republican say she has had enough, because, as frustrating as the situation might be, she is exactly what our politics needs right now.
We need more people like her, really, who are willing to try and build bridges, even if the notion isn’t popular within their own party. Extremism on the left and right is a dangerous, unproductive thing. Washington is proving that brilliantly right now.
