For many young musicians at Montevideo High School, their performances at the Minnesota State High School League Solo and Ensemble Festival are the most anticipated of the year.
The festival, held annually at Benson High School, allows musicians from several area schools to perform prepared pieces before a judge and receive ratings based on these performances. Duets and small ensembles are also allowed to participate. The 2012 festival was held on Saturday, March 31.
All performances at the festival are judged on a total of eight performance factors, including tone quality, rhythm and technique, each graded on a five-point scale, for a possibility of a perfect 40-point score.
