  • Heading into the season with virtually their entire lineup back from last season, the Montevideo boys golf team was the solid favorite to defend its West Central Conference South championship.
But after three of the seven conference meets, Benson/KMS is giving the Thunder Hawks a run for their money.
After the Thunder Hawks finished third in the opening meet of the conference season at Olivia on April 19, they have been looking up at Benson/KMS in the standings.
Montevideo edged the Braves by two strokes to win last Thursday’s conference meet at Granite Falls, but Benson/KMS returned the favor by topping the T-Hawks by four shots on Monday at Morris.
Mike Moritz led the Thunder Hawks with a 38 on his former home course at Granite Falls. Grant Tufto and Phillip Ward tied for the team’s best round at Morris with 39s.
Montevideo will look to cut into the two-point deficit in the standings when they host a conference meet at The Crossings today (Thursday). Another WCC?South meet will be held at Atwater on Tuesday.
The T-Hawks started the week by finishing sixth in a strong 16-team field in the Benson Invitational last Wednesday. Phillip Ward finished third, one shot behind medalist Jake Hasslen of Ortonville.
