Women recovering from breast cancer will experience the life-changing benefits that come from a unique quality of life program that combines counseling, medical information, and fly fishing at the fourth Minnesota/Wisconsin Casting for Recovery retreat taking place from June 1-3 at the Lodge at Crooked Lake in N. Siren, WI.

Casting for Recovery, a national non-profit organization founded in 1996, and the Minneapolis office of The Hartford, a major life insurance company, are providing MN/WI women at any age and any stage of treatment and recovery from breast cancer with this opportunity to experience a program that can help them heal both physically and emotionally.

Open to 14 area women and held at the Lodge at Crooked Lake in N. Siren, WI, the Casting for Recovery retreat calls on the services of trained volunteers, including medical and counseling professionals, to build a focus on wellness instead of illness, on empowerment as opposed to helplessness.

Melissa Bearth, retreat program coordinator and an employee of The Hartford, notes that the dynamics of fly fishing provide a healing connection to the natural world, relieve stress, and promote a sense of calm. She also explains that techniques learned in fly casting provide a gentle exercise, similar to the exercises physicians recommend after radiation and surgery, which promote joint and soft tissue mobility.

She notes, "The many volunteers from The Hartford and the community have been actively preparing for the retreat. We are so excited to meet the retreat attendees and make this weekend special for all of them."

Brian Murphy, Executive Vice President of Life Insurance at the Hartford, says, "As a member of CFR's Board of Trustees, I have seen firsthand CFR's degree of planning and commitment to provide an experience for women that is life-changing. Their retreats do much more than expose women to fly fishing. They introduce participants to other women who have similar experiences and help them form new relationships, so together they are better able to address the impact of their disease. It is quite memorable for both participants and volunteers. The Hartford is very proud of our sponsorship and involvement."

The Hartford, Casting for Recovery's premier national sponsor, was the first insurer in the nation to offer life insurance at standard rates to qualified women age 40 and older who had been treated for early-stage breast cancer.
