Montevideo’s Phillip Ward capped his standout high school golf career by finishing in a tie for 16th in the state Class AA tournament at The Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan last Wednesday.
Ward, who was 23rd in last year’s state tourney, shot rounds of 74 and 78 for a 36-hole total of 152 to finish 10 shots back of individual champion Taylor Sundbom, of Hermantown.
“I was unhappy how I finished (the first day),” said Ward, who took a double-bogey on the 18 hole. “The last day, the conditions were much tougher. The wind was stronger and the pin positions were tougher.
“I?like the course, but it is very difficult when it’s windy. The par 5s are tough to birdie.”
Ward plans to play in some of the top amateur tournaments in the state this summer, including the Minnesota State Amateur and, possibly, the Lakeland in Willmar.
