The Montevideo Spartans, American Legion and VFW baseball teams will all be entering the playoffs in the next few days.
The Spartans won their regular season finale 9-7 at Chokio on Saturday.
Cam Vien went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Mitch Christensen and Tyler Kuno had two hits each. Christensen and Joe Schlagel both had two RBI. Christian Brabender worked the first seven innings to get the win.
The Spartans will open the Land O’Ducks playoffs Saturday at 7 p.m. at Morris. The double-elmination tourney continues Sunday at Morris.
The Montevideo Legion team closed the season with wins over Willmar and Minneota.
Joe Bednar drove in all three runs as Post 59 edged Willmar 3-2 here last Wednesday. Colton Vien pitched a complete game five hitter, with 10 strikeouts.
Montevideo nipped Minneota 3-2 here Thursday. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Post 59 scored twice on four straight singles by Jordan Thompson, Ricky Schmitz, Kyle TeBeest and Joe Bednar. Thompson pitched all eight innings, striking out six.
Post 59 is the No. 1 seed in the southwest bracket of the District 7, Division II tournament. Montevideo will play its first game today (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at home against Sacred?Heart/MACCRAY. Montevideo will host the rest of the southwest bracket games Saturday and Sunday.
The VFW team closed its regular season with a 6-2 win at Dawson on Tuesday.
Adam Kilibarda pitched five hitless innings of relief to get the win. He struck out four and the lone run off him was unearned. Starter Jordan Thompson notched six strikeouts in the first two innings.
Ricky Schmitt, Markus Kranz and Thompson had two hits each. Thompson and Spencer Hildahl both drove in two runs.
Post 380 will likely open District 5 tournament play on Friday. Pairings were not yet determined.
