  • The Montevideo Spart­ans split their first two games in the Land O’Ducks Canvas Division playoffs.
    The Spartans lost 9-4 in the opening round at Morris on Saturday.
    Montevideo scored all four of its runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead, highlighted by a three-run homer by Cam Vien. Troy Hendrickson singled to score the first run of the inning. Mitch Christensen followed with a single and both runners scored on Vien’s homer to left.
    Vien had two of Montevideo’s six hits.
    The Spartans stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament with an 11-6 win over Benson on Sunday.
    Montevideo scored three runs in each of the first two innings. Cam Vien’s double scored the first run. Joe Schlagel followed with a single to score Vien. Following a walk to Christian Brabender, Josh Anderson singled to score Schlagel.
    Schlagel singled in a run in the second and Brabender drew a bases-loaded walk. The third run of the inning scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Anderson.
    Christensen doubled to score Troy Hendrickson in the fifth inning.
    The Spartans scored four in the seventh. Christensen had an RBI single with his fourth hit of the game. Vien had an RBI double, Tyler Kuno singled in a run and another run scored on an error.
    Anderson and Vien had three hits each and Kuno and Schlagel added two each as the Spartans outhit the Chiefs 15-10.
    Brabender pitched the first 5 2/3 innings to get the win, with Vien coming on to get a save.
    The Spartans will play Morris again at 4 p.m. on Saturday in Benson, with the loser being eliminated. The winner will advance to the Region 9C playoffs.
