With the Chippewa County Fair coming up, I am reminded again of one of the reasons I enjoy small town America, and the Midwest.
I don’t usually attend for one specific event or another. The musical entertainment usually doesn’t draw me in. The food certainly gets my attention, though.
What really brings me to the fair every year, though, is the tone. I enjoy taking an afternoon and wandering around, taking a look at the animals, poking my head into the different craft, cooking and design exhibits, looking at the rides and browsing all the different events. I don’t usually end up spending a lot of money, unless something really catches my eye, but I enjoy the tone. The smells and the laughter, along with people genuinely just having fun is a nice atmosphere to me.
It’s a lot of fun seeing what different people have worked on, and having a taste of local talent — especially the cooks.
I might check out the polka specifically, though. I was never a fan of the music, but after spending about a year in Sleepy Eye, where everyone listens to polka, I have learned to appreciate it, and miss it a little.
