  • On July 17, Mike Jacobs, a 1967 graduate of Montevideo High School, was inducted into the Minnesota High School Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame.
    Jacobs has been the head cross country coach at Marshall High School since 1980. During his 33-year career, he has led the Tigers’ boys team to 18 Southwest Conference championships, five state Class AA appearances and state championships in 2003 and 2004. He coached a state individual champion, Yahya Iman, in 2004. His girls teams won 12 conference titles and appeared in 10 state meets, including seven straight from 1994 through 2000.
    Starting this fall, Jacobs will only coach the boys cross country team. He is also the boys track coach. He retired from teaching (art) in 2011.
    Jacobs was asked to be the assistant cross country coach in 1979 and the Tigers’ head coach left at the end of the school year.
    “I just kind of stumbled into it,” Jacobs told Matt Dahlseid of the?Marshall Independent. “As far as cross country, anything about the sport, I really basically knew nothing.
