  • After just a few days of freedom, Sheen Jamale Newton is being held at the jail facility in Yellow Medicine County.
The level 3 predatory offender was released to 537 North Fourth Street in Montevideo on July 26 under heavy supervision to begin a 10-year reintegration period. At 1:30 a.m. on July 29, there was an attempted arson at his residence; the building was set on fire at the front of the house.
According to the Montevideo Police Department, Newton was inside the building when the fire was lit, and a neighbor called the fire in.
Sgt. Ken Schule, of the Police Department, was unable to go into detail about the incident.
"I can't get into (how it was started) right now because it is an open investigation, all I can really say is that it was started on fire," Schule said.
The Police Department is unable to provide many details, however, Schule was able to confirm that the department was working with the State Fire Marshal on the investigation, and that some evidence had been collected from the scene. He said that, so far, no one had called in any leads, but the department is hoping a witness may come forward.
The Police Department asks that anyone who may have information not assume what they know is already known by investigators, and call the Minnesota Arson Hotline at (800) 723-2020. The arson hotline is a state entity, which has rewards available for anyone with information that helps lead to the identification of the person(s) responsible for arson.
At this point, it is unclear when Newton will be released again, as he will need to follow the same procedure as before in securing and reporting his own living arrangements. A public notice will be made when Newton makes arrangements, and the location and release date will be announced.
