  • Montevideo's cross country teams had a solid showing in their first meet of the season at Appleton last Thursday.
The Montevideo boys finished second, behind defending Section 3A champion Redwood Valley, while the Thunder Hawks girls were fourth.
Junior Joe Varpness led the Montevideo boys with a fourth-place finish, followed closely by senior Ryan Maroney. Mitchell Moe finished eighth.
The Montevideo girls were paced by senior Addie Reinert, who finished ninth. Jamilah Carson was 11th and Trisha Jakobs placed 13th.
Kailee Jakobs won the junior high girls race.
"Overall we were very pleased with our performances for the first meet," said coach Todd Rietveld. "It was the second meet for the other teams. We now have a baseline and incentive to train harder and improve."
The Thunder Hawks will compete in the Milbank Invitational Saturday at 9:30 a.m. On Monday the teams travel to Norwood-Young America for a 3:15 p.m. meet.
