  • An inexperienced Montevideo football team suffered a 42-0 loss to Paynesville in the season opener here Friday.
Paynesville, a state tournament team last season, scored on its first three possessions in taking a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Bulldogs had two running backs rush for more than 100 yards. Anthony Johnson had 164 yards on just 13 carries, and Nathan Meyer gained 161 yards on 23 attempts as Paynesville had 406 yards of total offense, to just 58 for the Thunder Hawks.
Montevideo's best chance to score came early in the second quarter when the Bulldogs elected to try to pick up a first down deep in their own territory.
The Bulldogs threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-two from their own 11-yard line, but the T-Hawks gave the ball right back with a fumble.
Montevideo's defense forced a punt and the T-Hawks got the ball back on the Paynesville 25, but they came up inches short on a fourth down play.
With the defensive unit on the field most of the night, the T-Hawks were led in tackles by Justin Welling and Charles O'Malley with seven each. Logan Knoshal came up with an interception that ended a Paynesville drive in the third quarter.
Montevideo will host Sauk Centre Friday at 7 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Sauk Centre, but their field is not ready.
The Mainstreeters defeated Yellow Medicine East 46-6 Friday at Granite Falls. Roosevelt Austin rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns for Sauk Centre.
