Getting a preview of what to expect in the Section 3A meet and taking on some larger Minnesota and South Dakota schools, the Montevideo cross country teams competed in the Adrian Invitational Tuesday.
The Montevideo boys finished sixth out of 17 teams, while the Thunder Hawks girls were eighth out of 16 complete teams.
Ryan Maroney led the way for the Montevideo boys with a 13th-place finish in the quality field of runners.
The Montevideo girls were led by Claire Sulflow, who finished 24th out of 110 runners.
"This was a great preview for the section meet," said Montevideo coach Jamie Harrington. "Redwood Valley, the favorite to win the (boys) section, was not there, but they were replaced by Worthington, Marshall and the two Sioux Falls schools (Washington and Roosevelt). We ran fairly well overall, but I think we have a little more in the tank to mount a challenge in two weeks.
"Our focus is now on getting ourselves mentally and physically ready for the conference meet next week."
Kurt TeBeest finished fourth in the JV boys race. Also placing in the top 10 were Adam Wheeler, ninth, and Adam DeZeeuw, 10th.
The Thunder Hawks will compete in the West Central Conference meet Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Paynesville. Teams entered are BOLD, Benson/KMS, Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd, Minnewaska, Montevideo, Morris/Chokio-Alberta, Paynesville, Sauk Centre and Yellow Medicine East.
