  • There is a very special Military Appreciation Event coming to Montevideo, MN at the Montevideo Senior High School on November 9th at 7:00 PM. The event will feature Vice Admiral Lyle Bien who honorably served his country for 31 years in the Navy. He is a native of Hillhead, South Dakota. He has over 5000 hours piloting fighter jets, over 1300 aircraft carrier landings , and flew over 225 sorties over North and South Vietnam. Vice Admiral Bien then assisted General Norman Schwartzkopf designing the strike force during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He later served under General Colin Powell while General Powell served as the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He received 23 medals and accommodation’s throughout his career. He served on or commanded six different Aircraft Carriers. He helped design the “Top Gun” pilot training which trained the very most elite pilots of the Navy and Air Force. He continues to serve his country in retirement through his service on several boards around the world. He currently serves on the boards of several Navy suppliers, and on the boards of the Navys most high tech space communications. He is one of the most respected officers ever to put on a Navy uniform, and is one of the greatest speakers you will ever hear according to a local Military Planning Committee member who has heard him speak in the past. The event is going to be attended by several military and political dignitaries. The event is being sponsored by the American Legion Post 59 of Montevideo, MN. Free tickets are available at Bills Supermarket, Java River, Montevideo American Legion and Montevideo VFW. Tickets are also available at American Legion posts and VFW posts throughout West Central Minnesota. Preferential seating will be given to Veterans, their spouses, and widows. More information about the event will be on the front page of the Nov. 1 edition of the American-News.
