  • For the second straight year the Montevideo doubles team of Catherine Haugen and Sierra Frazier finished third in the Section 3A doubles tournament.
The Thunder Hawks senior duo, who were seeded fourth, won two matches last Thursday at Redwood Falls to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals on Tuesday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Haugen and Frazier were defeated 6-4, 7-5 in a highly competitive match by top-seeded Michaela Nordby and Acacia Foss, of St. James.
Haugen and Frazier, who played first and second singles, respectively, for the Thunder Hawks most of the season, came back to win the third-place match 6-2, 6-2 over Paige Adams-Kynzie Smedsrud, of Luverne.
Frazier and Haugen still had hopes of qualifying for the state tournament. If Nordby and Foss would defeat St. James' other doubles team of Megan Lahti and Michaela Nelson in the championship match, Frazier and Haugen would get a "true-second" match against Lahti and Nelson.
That didn't happen. Though they were the No. 3 seeds going into the tournament, Lahti and Nelson defeated Nordby and Foss 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, denying Haugen and Frazier a chance at a true-second match.
Playing together for the first time this season, Montevideo's doubles team of seniors Rose Reinert and Froya Olson won their opening round match before losing a close three-setter in the quarterfinals to Lahti and Nelson. Olson and Reinert led 5-4 in the third set before the eventual champions won the final three games of the match.
