  • Montevideo's cross country teams will compete in the Section 3A meet today (Thursday) at 4 p.m. at the Adrian Country Club.
Running for the Montevideo boys team will be Ryan Maroney, Zac Enevoldsen, Joe Varpness, Tristan Weber, Jared Benjamin, Kurt TeBeest and Mitchell Moe. Alternates are Adam Wheeler and Adam DeZeeuw.
The Thunder Hawks girls team will consist of Claire Sulflow, Addie Reinert, Jaden Wamstad, Trisha Jakobs, Mollie Varpness, Taylor Root and Jamilah Carson. Alternates are Julia Voller and Rachel Stevens.
Montevideo coach Jamie Harrington says Redwood Valley is the clear favorite in the boys meet and will likely take one of the two invitations to the state meet.
"After that, it is a three- team race for the final spot between Canby/Minneota/Lincoln HI, Luverne and Montevideo," said Harrington. "CML and Luverne edged us out at Adrian last time, but we are still showing improvement and have options. We made a roster change before conference and are running with a lot of confidence right now. We have to run well and do our jobs effectively, but we have a great opportunity on Thursday. As always, our depth is our strength. We don't have front runners like Redwood, CML and Luverne, but we are much stronger with our number four to seven runners."
The girls face a steeper task on Thursday, but not an impossible one, according to Harrington.
"We have continued to improve throughout the year and have been closing the gap on the teams ahead of us. If we can get 100 percent healthy for the first time all year, we'll be able to put a scare into the favorites, who are likely Luverne, CML, Adrian, LqPV/DB and Redwood Valley. If we have our best day collectively, it could get interesting in a hurry."
