  • On Nov. 9, a highly decorated vice admiral of the United States Navy will be the special guest speaker at the Military Appreciation Event at 7 p.m. at the Montevideo High School gymnasium.
Lyle Bien, retired vice admiral, served his country for 31 years in the Navy. He logged more than 5,000 hours as a fighter jet pilot and made over 1,300 aircraft carrier landings.
During the Vietnam War, Bien flew 225 sorties over North and South Vietnam. He received 23 medals and commendations throughout his military career.
Bien assisted Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf designing the strike force during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He served on or commanded six U.S. aircraft carriers.
Bien later served under Gen. Colin Powell while Powell was on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Bien also helped design the Top Gun pilot training program which trained the most elite pilots of the Navy and Air Force.
Bien, a native of Hillhead, S.D., continues to serve his country in retirement through his service on the boards of several Navy suppliers and the Navy's most high-tech space communications.
"He is one of the most respected officers ever to put on a Navy uniform, and is one of the greatest speakers you will ever hear," said Kevin Roggatz, a local planning committee member who has heard him speak in the past.
The program will also include music by the Chord-Ayres men's chorus and the 451st Army Band from Fort Snelling.
The event is expected to be attended by several military and political dignitaries.
There is no admission charge for the event, but preferential seating will be given to veterans and their family members. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
The Military Appreciation Event is sponsored by American Legion Post 59 of Montevideo.
