Clean up the River Environment (CURE) is sponsoring free tours to the public of its offices on Thursday, Nov 15, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the upstairs of the KK Berge Building at 813 Prentice Street in Granite Falls and from 3 to 5 p.m. at its main office at 117 South First Street in Montevideo.
Refreshments will be served and tours will be given of the unique features of each office housed in buildings that CURE has worked to restore and re-purpose over the past several years.
Highlights of the tour at the Granite Falls CURE office on the second floor of the KK Berge building include great river views and Main Street Granite Falls overlooks. The second floor is used for meetings, discussions, gatherings and art classes sponsored by the Granite Arts Council. CURE would like to make the general public more aware of the possibilities of the space for use by the public.
The tour of the Montevideo office will feature CURE’s Upstairs Writers Retreat where different rooms have been dedicated to various authors such as Montevideo native Paul Gruchow, Southwest State University historian Joe Amato and poets Florence Dacey and Athena Kildegaard. Recently, CURE dedicated the kitchen of the Writer’s Retreat to author/farmer Atina Diffley who began the process of formulating her critically acclaimed book “Turn Here Sweet Corn” upstairs from the Montevideo CURE office in 2010.
The Open House in Granite Falls will be held in conjunction with a visit by the U.S. Department of Interior’s Senior Advisor Rebecca Wodder from Washington D.C. Wodder’s visit is in support of a nomination of the Minnesota River to the National Blueways System. The new National Blueways System is an initiative to recognize community-driven partnerships in watersheds and river systems that are working toward conservation and other important environmental and economic outcomes. Wodder will be at the KK Berge building from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, November 15.
