Be a lobbiest for our planet
Several weeks ago, four members of the Citizens Climate Lobby visited Montevideo. We met with this newspaper and toured your beautiful city.
Our aim in visiting Montevideo was to bring awareness to the problems of climate change. The CCL is a non-profit, non-partisan grassroots group of people (60 groups in the U.S. and Canada) whose purpose is to lobby our elected officials to make informed decisions regarding our changing climate, to change our dependence on fossil fuels, and to enact laws to protect us from those whose main purpose is to make billions without a thought to the environment.
Our intent is to encourage citizens in the community to become active lobbiests for our planet by gathering together, on a monthly basis, to listen to scientists, concerns of the military and educators who speak on climate change (conference call from our base in California) and to use this information to lobby state and federal legislators … to educate and encourage them to make critical decisions on state and national levels to help control fossil fuel dependence (which is eating our economy and interfering w/ our climate).
The facts are that our climate is changing at an alarming rate, the vexing truth is that 2012 was a year of "weather on steroids." From extreme drought and catastrophic wildfires to devastating storms and floods, the climate crisis has arrived. And the key to solving it is educating those around us and making the necessary changes, switching from fossil based fuels to renewable resources.
The renewable energy industry is growing exponentially; in fact, the clean energy economy is growing twice as fast as the rest of the economy, and we have enough potential wind and solar energy in the U.S. to power our economy 100 times over.
The benefits of a clean energy economy are undeniable; not only will we rid ourselves of dangerous pollution that can make us sick and even cause deaths, we can finally be energy independent.
