The Montevideo Gold Dusters opened the competitive portion of their season by finishing third out of eight teams in high kick competition at the Hutchinson Invitational Saturday. Hutchinson won the competition, with Belle Plaine finishing second.
Dance team competitions are scored in five areas: kicks, execution, choreography, difficulty and routine effectiveness. The Gold Dusters received their highest scores for kicks and choreography. Out of a possible 500 points, the Gold Dusters received 320 points.
'Our association is hoping that the more we put numbers to our competitions, the more people will look at us as a sport," said Montevideo coach Sharon Forde.
The Gold Dusters junior varsity team placed second, behind Hutchinson.
"Both (Montevideo) teams danced with great accuracy and power," said Forde. "The varsity scored higher than in the first three competitions last year, so we have a great base to build from.
The Gold Dusters are entered in the Fridley competition Saturday at 4 p.m.
