  • The Montevideo girls basketball team took a 5-3 record into the holiday break with a 61-40 road win over Benson Friday, giving the Thunder Hawks a season sweep of the Braves.
    The Thunder Hawks broke open a tight game by going on an 13-0 run, extending a 44-36 lead midway through the second half to a 57-36 advantage with less than four minutes to play.
    Tori Kuhlmann started the run of 13 unanswered points with a layup. Ashley Hoehne followed with a free throw and a basket, and Natalie Feldhake scored on consecutive possessions. Hoehne scored on a fast-break and Tia Diggins put back an offensive rebound for a 57-36 Montevideo lead with 3:46 to play.
    Benson led by as much as six points in the first half, taking a 16-10 lead on Emma Peterson's rebound basket before Montevideo regained the lead for keeps.
    Hoehne made a field goal, Diggins nailed a three-point shot over Benson's zone defense, and Diggins scored on a rebound basket for a 17-16 Montevideo lead.
    Alexis Nissen made a three-pointer for a 19-17 Benson lead but, when Kuhlmann hit a three-pointer, the T-Hawks took a lead they would not surrender.
    Hoehne scored 25 points, 16 coming in the second half. Diggins added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Kuhlmann contributed nine points and nine assists, and Jessie Janisch had a team-high 11 rebounds from her point guard position.
    The T-Hawks will re­sume action with a home game against Yellow Medicine East on Jan. 4.
