  • Out of the heartache of her own personal tragedy, Kristen Brown discovered her inner strength and the ability to help and inspire others.
Brown, the former Kristen Larson, a 1994 Montevideo High School graduate, has written two books — "The Best Worst Thing" and "The Happy Hour Effect: 12 Secrets to Minimize Stress and Maximize Life" — that have both hit the Amazon bestseller list.
Brown's first book, published in 2011, chronicles her journey through her early years of widowhood, following the death of her husband, Todd Brown, a 1995 MHS graduate.
Todd was 30 years old and seemingly a picture of health when he died on Sept. 7, 2007, at the age of 30.
"I was widowed at the age of 31 when our daughter (Brooke) was just a baby, followed a couple of weeks later by a challenging job situation and then the downfall of the economy," said Kristen. "I had major personal and professional stress happening all at once and it was not pretty. But I realized after a few months of suffering, illness and near mental collapse, that I had to find a way to manage my stress and be a role model for my daughter.
"I started reading, writing and taking classes on wellness, psychology, grief, stress and every other self-help topic you can think of."
It was through writing "The Best Worst Thing" that Brown discovered her true calling of writing and speaking to inspire others. In 2009, she started a company called Happy Hour Effect that "helps people to minimize stress and maximize life despite the challenges that come along every day."
