The Montevideo High School Music Listening team of seniors Kaia Marcinkowski and Froya Olson and junior Mitch Moe dominated the central regional competition at St. Cloud Tech High School Jan. 18.
Olson, Marcinkowski and Moe took first place with a score of 90 out of 100. Finishing a distant second was a team from Brainerd, with a score of 73. These two teams will advance to state competition at Augsburg College on Feb. 1.
Just behind Brainerd, in third place, was the Montevideo team of Madelaine Padula, Avery Carlbom and Danae Milbrandt.
Also competing for Montevideo were the teams of Mackenzie Flickinger, Reed Boettcher and Rose Hathaway; Rachel Stevens, Mikaela Erickson and Allyssa Parker; and Aimee Hampton, Katherine O'Malley and Rylee Schultz.
There are nine regions in the state and each has advanced two teams to state competition. There is only one class for Music Listening.
Coach Dan Hampton said Montevideo's team score of 90 was the second highest score of teams qualifying for state competition, trailing only the 94 points by Wayzata.
The Music Listening Contest is sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio and numerous other sponsors.
