Montevideo will send a contingent of six swimmers to the state Class A meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Friday and Saturday.
The Thunder Hawks finished third in the Section 3A meet at Sartell Friday and Saturday, trailing only Sartell-St. Stephen and Melrose/Sauk Centre.
Advancing to the state meet will be the medley relay team of Jack Spaeth, Tyler Gort, Calin Anderson and Adam Peters and the 400 freestyle quartet of Adam Peters, Anderson, Andrew Peters and Spaeth.
Qualifying as individuals were Spaeth, in the 200 IM and backstroke; Gort, in the 200 IM and breaststroke; and Daylen Mitlyng, in the 200 and 500 freestyle.
Spaeth set a new school record in winning the 200 IM, breaking J.T. Moon's previous record that was set in 1995.
Also earning medals by finishing in the top eight of their events were Daylen Mitlyng and Andrew Peters in the 200 freestyle; Adam Peters, 50 freestyle; Donavon Albers, diving; Mitlyng, and Andrew Peters, 500 freestyle; and the 200 freestyle relay of Mitlyng, Gort, Anderson and Adam Peters.
"In my wildest dreams I would have not expected us to have such a showing in time drops," said Montevideo coach Matt Olson. "Our boys stepped up to the challenge at every level and showed Montevideo is a force to be reckoned with."
The state Class A swimming preliminaries will begin Friday at noon. The finals are Saturday at noon.
