  • Montevideo Mayor Debra Lee Fader and the Convention and Visitor's Bureau are gearing up for the second year in a row to fill main street with a little more color.
The effort started last year when the Montevideo City Council agreed to allow the city's baskets to be used to hang flowers across main street, if enough money could be raised to pay Heather Floral and Greenhouse to fill, hang and water the baskets daily.
Putting flowers up along main street was previously a task the city took on, but when it became clear the city was going to have to make the budget stretch further and further, funds were no longer available for the hanging flower baskets.
"The cost of the baskets is one thing (about $50 each), the worst cost is the daily watering that needs to be done," Montevideo City Manager Steve Jones explained at the time. "To keep them watered entails overtime by city staff on the weekends. If you miss one day, you will lose your investment in the baskets."
So, just like last year, there is $5,200 to be raised. Fader said she hopes to have the money collected by April 15 so there is plenty of time to get the baskets up for spring and summer.
"We're looking to do the 26 baskets again. We'd love to increase it to 52 baskets, but if we can just get to the budget we had last year it will certainly be beautiful. We can always go for the larger order later," said Fader. "Everything again will be handled through Heather Floral ... the baskets will be the same as last year. It comes out to $250 a basket. That includes the every day watering of each basket."
Fader said she thinks keeping the hanging flower baskets on main street each year is an important effort for Montevideo.
