Seal tile for looks and longevity

Professional tile installer and Club member Ken Phillips of Las Vegas, Nevada, lays out extensive tile grid lines and seals them with clear spray lacquer to prevent them from being scuffed away. The grid ensures that the tiles will be straight and helps him visualize the entire layout. To start the pattern, Ken lays a grid area that contains four to 16 tiles for instance, four 12-in. tiles to form roughly a 2 x 2-ft. square. He snaps chalk lines on the floor around the tiles and then repeats the pattern to produce an even grid across the room. Remember to open windows for ventilation when using the lacquer and not to spray around appliances with pilot lights.
