  • At around noon on Wednesday, Chippewa County received a request from Rock, Murray and Nobles County, asking if they could use cots and blankets from Chippewa County, as they had lost power due to freezing rain and high winds. They estimated that at least 1,000 area residents were in need of shelter.

Chippewa County and Lyon County had received a grant for 300 cots and blankets (to be split between the two counties) and they were just recently received.

The cots and blankets were promptly delivered to the elementary school in Luverne, Minnesota and the plan was to use the school for sheltering.

"I want to express my thanks for the quick response from Reed Molden and Justin Smith from the County Highway Department, Scott Williams for the use of the Chippewa County Land and Resource Trailer and the Chippewa County Highway Department for supplying the truck. Personnel from the Land and Resource, County Data Processing, and County Drainage Departments quickly assisted in loading the cots and blankets," said Marvin Garbe, Chippewa County Emergency Manager. "Justin Smith and I then proceeded to Marshall to load their cots and blankets (as well) and proceeded to Luverne. We arrived at about 4:30 p.m. Rock County will return the cots and blankets when they are done with them."
