News to know
A Pennsylvania woman who was missing and presumed dead for 11 years turned herself in to Florida police, CNN reports. Brenda Heist told police in Key Largo, Fla., that she believed she may have been wanted in another county. When officers checked her name, they saw she was listed as "missing and possibly deceased" in by authorities in Lititz, Pa. Heist claims she met up with a group of hitchhikers in 2002 while dealing with financial difficulties and going through a divorce. They invited her to join them on their trip to Florida and she agreed. Heist spent the next 11 years in the state without attempting to contact anyone in her family. She has two children, one in college and one who has graduated. Her husband was initially suspected, then cleared, in her disappearance. He petitioned the court to have her declared dead and has since remarried.
