Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, will be the host for the commissioning ceremonies of USS MINNESOTA (SSN-783) on September 7, 2013, at the United States Naval Operating Base in Norfolk, Virginia. The submarine’s sponsor, Mrs. Ellen Roughead, the wife of the former Chief of Naval Operations, will preside over the ceremony. After commissioning, the USS MINNESOTA will be the tenth VIRGINIA Class submarine to join the fleet and will be homeported in Groton, Connecticut.
The submarine will be the third ship to bear the state name. The first USS MINNESOTA, a sailing steam frigate, was commissioned in 1857 and served during the Civil War, remaining in service until her decommissioning in 1898. USS MINNESOTA was part of the first battle of 'ironclad's', the famous battle between USS MONITOR and CSS VIRGINIA. In fact, the sailors of USS MONITOR placed their ship between the MINNESOTA and VIRGINIA, likely saving MINNESOTA from destruction. The second MINNESOTA (BB-22) was commissioned in 1907. On December 16, 1907 she departed Hampton Roads as one of the sixteen battleships of the Great White Fleet sent by then-President Theodore Roosevelt on a voyage around the world. She continued her service through World War I, and was decommissioned in 1922.
When commissioned, MINNESOTA will be the most powerful and capable submarine in the world. With her crew of 135 officers and men, she will perform a broad spectrum of open ocean and littoral missions. She will be armed with torpedoes and missiles, attain a speed in excess of twenty-five knots, and operate at a depth exceeding 800 feet.
