  • It’s been an exciting couple of weeks for Montevideo High School senior Ryan Maroney. Nine days after receiving the Floyd Arnold Award, given to Montevideo’s outstanding senior male athlete, Maroney qualified for the state Class A tennis tournament.
Maroney finished second in the Section 3A singles tournament at Redwood Falls Tuesday, losing 6-1, 6-2 in the championship match to Jess Hansen of Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd. Hansen, just a freshman, is the fourth brother in his family to win the section singles crown.
Maroney was the No. 2 seed and he advanced to the semifinals with a pair of straight-sets wins.
Maroney’s semifinal match against Luverne’s Dustin Deutsch was a three-set battle. Maroney led 5-1 in the deciding third set, but Deutsch came back to win the next three games before Maroney put the match away.
Maroney will take a 14-5 record into the state Class A tourney on June 6 at the Reed Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
“He’s in phenomenal shape and he never gives up on a single ball,” said Montevideo coach Mark Johnson.
