Montevideo senior Derek Bruns will compete in the state Class AA golf tournament after shooting a 79 in section play at Eagle Creek in Willmar last Thursday.
Bruns played steady golf all day in windy conditions, making just one double-bogey while carding nine-hole scores of 39 and 40.
After not playing his best golf early in the season, Bruns has come on strong.
“It was disappointing because I knew what I could shoot,” he said. “I drove the ball really well today and if it was a shorter hole, I could club down and hit a 3-wood.”
Bruns will play in the state tourney June 11-12 at the Ridges at Sand Creek course in Jordan.
Thunder Hawks senior Rose Reinert shot a very respectable 103 on nine-hole rounds of 53 and 50. Her first nine (Eagle Creek’s back nine) included a birdie on the 18th hole.
Reinert said her iron play was the best part of her game.
Section team champions were the Minnewaska girls and Marshall boys.
