Montevideo will send a contingent of five boys and one girls to the state Class A track meet at Hamline University Friday and Saturday.
The Thunder Hawks had two individual champions in the Section 3A meet at Benson last Thursday.
Junior Jack Spaeth won the 110-meter high hurdles and sophomore Jamilah Carson won the girls 800-meter run. Carson won her race by nearly a full second, while Spaeth was victorious by a margin of .45 seconds.
Also qualifying for the state meet with a runner-up finish was the boys 800 relay quartet of senior Matt Fischer, junior Wyatt Enger, sophomore Casey Reeves and freshman Adam DeZeeuw.
“We are excited to get Jack, Jamilah and the boys 4-by-200 to state,” said coach Dave Schimming. “We competed extremely hard and just missed state in the boys 1,600, high jump, and pole vault, and the girls 4-by-200 and 4-by-400 set season bests and just missed state bids.”
Senior Jared Benjamin lost a tiebreaker for second place and a trip to state in the pole vault. Junior Joe Varpness had a strong meet, finishing third in the 1,600 and fourth in the 3,200.
The Thunder Hawks finished fourth in the boys team standings and 10th in the girls meet.
