An Independence Day toast to the Preamble

Maybe if Constitution Day got us a three-day weekend, Gouverneur Morris’ founding sentence about the aspirations for the federal government would get as much attention as Jefferson’s sentence about the new nation’s aspirations to equality. Or so I argue in my column today, suggesting we recite the Constitution’s Preamble on Thursday:



“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
