  • The Pirate girls' soccer team led Bemidji 1-0 after the first half but the Lumberjacks scored four in the second half for a 4-1 victory in Crookston.
Pirate head coach Sarah Reese noted that Bemidji's team appeared to be mostly junior varsity players that the Pirates didn't play the first time when Bemidji won 8-1.
Crookston jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the first half on a direct free kick by junior Melida Argueta that was mishandled by the Bemidji goalkeeper and went into the net.
"The girls played a great first half--heads up and good passing," coach Reese said. "In the second half, they scored at the start of the half and it was as if we lost the wind in our sails both mentally and physically. If we give it our all and don't end up winning then so be it. Tonight was a winnable game and we didn't get after it."
Hannah Willford scored a little more than a minute into the second half and added another goal in the 71st minute. Destiny Christofferson scored in the 51st minute and Annah Schussman closed out the scoring in the 75th minute.
Pirate senior goalkeeper Carly Welter recorded seven saves, while Bemidji's Leighton Rockensock had six saves.
Crookston, which falls to 3-9-1, hosts Moorhead Thursday at 4 p.m. and closes out the regular season Saturday when it hosts Hibbing/Chisholm at noon.
