  • The Montevideo tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Section 3A tournament with a hard-fought, 5-2 victory over Yellow Medicine East.
Montevideo led 3-0 behind singles wins by Morgan Reidinger, Ashley Hoehne and Tina Lipinski before play was suspended last Wednesday due to rain.
Play continued the next day indoors at Redwood Falls, with Montevideo needing just one win to take the match.
It wouldn’t come easily. The Sting picked up victories at first and second doubles.
Securing the win for Montevideo were Kailey Maroney, who won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, and the No. 3 doubles team of Avery Koosmann and Natasha Smith, who needed three sets to defeat their opponents.
The win put the Thunder Hawks into the section semifinals against Fairmont. The match was played on Wednesday after the American-News went to press.
The win over YME lifted Montevideo’s record to 15-8.
The Section 3A singles and doubles tournament started today (Thursday) at Redwood Falls. It will conclude Monday, Oct. 14, at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
