Undeterred by gloomy preseason forecasts, about 50 hunters have registered to participate in Saturday’s Burnt Powder Festival, sponsored by the Montevideo Area Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The event, with a new name this year, originated two years ago when Montevideo hosted the inaugural Governor’s Pheasant Opener.
While this year’s attendance won’t approach the numbers that participated in that first hunt, there is still plenty of enthusiasm for the event, with hopes of having the governor’s hunt return here again in the not-to-distant future.
Autumn Rittel, executive director of the Montevideo Area Chamber of Commerce, said the majority of the hunters who have registered to hunt pheasants and geese are from outside the immediate area. That’s a plus for promoting the hunting opportunities and accomodations our area has to offer.
