  • Last Thursday, the Minnesota Senate Capital Investment/Bond-ing Committee met at Southwest Minnesota State University to hear testimony from around southwest Minnesota about various projects with bonding requests.
From Montevideo, Marv Garbe, city council president and veterans home chairman, Steve Jones, city manager, and Angie Steinbach, community development director, attended to discuss a request for funding for phase three of a 15-year flood mitigation project, and a request for funding of a veterans home in Montevideo.
No funding is promised or awarded at the hearing, but it allows officials an opportunity to show the committee the importance of their project, and the work that has been put into it so far.
    Flood mitigation
Montevideo’s 15-year flood mitigation plan has been split into three phases. Phase one of the project rebuilt and improved the levee along Highway 7 near city hall. Phase two raised the levee near the water treatment plant and raised Highway 212.
Phase 3, an estimated $3 million project, would finish the long-term goal of protecting Montevideo from flooding by raising the 1969 levee.
