  • Holding the visiting Wolverines to just five second-half field goals, the Montevideo boys basketball team pulled away for a 58-43 non-conference win in the season opener for both teams Friday.
Play was somewhat ragged in the opening 10 minutes — not surprising for an opening game with a number of players from both teams taking the court for their first varsity games.
MACCRAY went on a 10-2 run to turn a 15-12 deficit into a 22-17 lead, with 6-5 Bailey Boike scoring six points and 6-9 Carter Asche four.
The Thunder Hawks countered with a 10-0 run. Ricky Schmitz scored six straight points, Preston Herfurth put back an offensive rebound, and Troy Diggins converted a steal for a 27-22 Montevideo lead. A pair of free throws in the final minute by Jacob Aviles cut the lead to 27-24 at halftime.
The T-Hawks opened the second half with a 9-2 run. Diggins opened the scoring, Spencer Hildahl scored after pulling down one of his eight offensive rebounds, Jordan Thompson hit the second of his five three-point baskets, and Diggins made a driving layup for a 36-26 Montevideo lead.
MACCRAY would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The T-Hawks put the game away with a 12-0 run that included a pair of three-pointers by Thompson.
Thompson and Diggins had 17 points each for Montevideo. Boike led all scorers with 18.
“I thought we played well, especially on the defensive end,” said Montevideo coach Dan Douglas.
Douglas used 10 players extensively. “We could even go deeper, it depends on the night. Some of these guys haven’t played varsity before. Once they get comfortable ...”
The T-Hawks will get back into action with a conference home game against Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta on Tuesday.
