Musician Andy Stermer, of Montevideo, Minn., will travel to Montevideo, Uruguay, this Jan. to study Uruguayan Candombe drumming, music and culture – and he wants to bring what he learns back to Minnesota.
Stermer is hosting the “Yes We Candombe!” concert Dec. 21 to raise funds for purchasing and shipping three artisan-made Candombe drums from Uruguay. After his return from Uruguay in late March, Stermer will use the drums in a number of performance- and education-based projects to share Candombe music with Minnesotan musicians.
“Yes We Candombe!” is Saturday, Dec. 21 at Java River café in Montevideo. Starting at 7:30 p.m., Stermer’s jazz trio, Tre Leche, will perform as well as local accordianista Malena Handeen. Admission is free, and the group will take up a free-will donation for the drums. The fundraising goal is $700.
