  • Craig Schmidt, a newly hired service hydrologist for Minnesota with the National Weather Service (NWS), has called Montevideo’s flood mitigation efforts progressive after a visit on Dec. 12.

“This was my first look at this sort of thing. I was impressed with how much work had been done. I had heard about what things were like in the past in Montevideo, and then saw how much had been done since,” said Schmidt, who previously worked with the weather service in Salt Lake City, Utah. “You always hear people complain in the news that there is building continuing to go on in flood plains ... but it was the opposite here.”

Schmidt took a tour with city staff, viewing Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the city’s levee project. Phase 1 rebuilt and improved the levee along Highway 7 near city hall. Phase 2 raised the levee near the water treatment plant and raised Highway 212.

“I saw the need to get the 1969 levee (rebuilt). That was the one big hazard left from what I could see,” Schmidt said.

Rebuilding the 1969 levee is part of Phase 3, an estimated $3 million project. The city has been trying to secure funding from the state, and has lobbied during recent committee hearings.
