  • Gary Nelson, a retired, longtime teacher and coach at MACCRAY High School in Clara City, MN, declared Monday his intention to seek the Republican endorsement for District 17A to challenge Democrat incumbent Representative Andrew Falk.
“I'm running for the Minnesota House to be a voice for the communities here in West Central Minnesota,” Nelson said. “I want to go with the best idea to solve problems. I will give my best effort to represent District 17A as well as the people of Minnesota no matter what their political affiliation is.”

“Andrew Falk voted for higher taxes on farmers and businesses. These taxes mean higher costs for everyone, and it’s just not right,” said Nelson. “I want to go to St. Paul to help our community. It’s time for common sense leadership, everyone should be able to keep more of what they earn.”

Nelson is a longtime resident of Clara City, Minnesota. Gary taught math, physical education, and driver’s education for than two decades at MACCRAY high school and one decade at Raymond High School.

In addition to coaching football and golf, Nelson was the head coach of the MACCRAY Wolverine's boy's basketball team for 33 years until his retirement in 2012.  He was voted MSHSL Class A Coach of the Year in 2009-2010, was 3-time Coach of the Year for Section 3, and 13-time Conference Coach of the Year.

Nelson is a graduate of St. Olaf College, and earned his masters from Southwest Minnesota State. He has volunteered extensively at Immanuel Lutheran church, MACCRAY High School, and around the community, including many years of experience as a volunteer firefighter and ambulance EMT in Raymond, MN.

Nelson resides in Clara City, MN where he works as a bus driver during his retirement. He has been married to his wife, Deb, for 31 years and has two adult sons and a daughter-in-law, Brock and his wife Heather, and Geoff.
