  • “You try to do the best you can each and every day,” said Richard “Butch” Halterman. “Each day I tried to pass along my passion for teaching these kids.”

Halterman, who has taught in Montevideo since 1987, plans to retire after this school year.
Well, actually, needing to be weened off more slowly, Halterman plans to help guide his replacement for part of the school year next year.

“I’m glad they’re letting me do that,” said Halterman. “I just don’t think I can walk away all at once.”

Halterman began as a teacher in the Slayton area and spent some time in Belview before getting a job in the Montevideo school district.

“A lot of things have changed over the years,” noted Halterman. “Some for the good, some I don’t like quite as well.”
