Montevideo Area Road Closure Information

By Montevideo Chamber Girls

Many questions have been asked regarding road closures.

All Montevideo Business's are accessible.

Hwy 212 East going to Granite is CLOSED. The detour to get in and out of Montevideo along Highway 212 will be onto County Road 16 (Farmers Co-op corner), up to County Road 15, then up to Highway 7.

Hwy 212 West going toward Dawson is open to local traffic with potential delays, so yes, at this point you can get through on this road.

We will keep you posted as we know updates.

Update on Construction in and Around Montevideo

This Summer from the Montevideo City Manager

As we have mentioned before, both the City of Montevideo and Mn/DOT are planning a number of projects for summer construction.

Mn/DOT PROJECTS FOR THIS SUMMER:

Pavement Rehabilitation Highway 212 West:  This project starts at the East Intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 59 (Trailway’s Corner) and continues West to approximately 3 miles past the West intersection of Highway 212 & Highway 59 (Where Highway 59 heads South towards Marshall).  The project starts up again ½ mile East of Dawson and continues West to the intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 75 including a short piece of Highway 75.  This project will rehabilitate the pavement and will be constructed using a detour.  The project will take a majority of the summer to complete.  Work should begin around dJune 1st and plans are for it to be done by August 31st.

Bituminous Mill & Overlay on Highway 7/Highway 29:  This project starts just South of the intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 59 (Trailway’s Corner) and continues West approximately 1 mile to the bridge over the entrance to Lagoon Park.  The project consists of removing and replacing 4” of bituminous pavement, guardrail & pipe repair.  Highway 7/Highway 29 will remain open to traffic during the project, delays should be expected.  Work likely will not begin until September 1st to allow the other projects in the area to be completed.

LEVEE CONSTRUCTION- CITY OF MONTEVIDEO PROJECTS :

Highway 212 from Trailways Corner East to Flinn’s Salvage: This entire stretch will be rebuilt and raised as part of Phase 2 of the levee project.  This project starts just east of the intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 59 (Trailway’s Corner) and continues east approximately 1 mile to Flinn’s Salvage.  At some point in the project County Road 42 will be affected.    Highwat 212 will be closed on April 23rd, by the intersection with OCunty Road 42 and Highway 212 will remain open until June.

Internal Projects: A number of internal city projects have been bid and should begin in late June.  They include North 6th Street, from Highway 7 north to Ost Avenue; Town Road; Orchard Circle; and Linda Lane and some Storm Sewer work on Lincoln Avenue.

Airport Main Runway Reconstruction:  The city anticipates that approval will be given for reconstruction of the main runway at the airport.  This work will not begin until August 1st.

May Day

By Montevideo Chamber Girls

When I had lunch today I was greeted with a May Day basket on my step. This got me wondering what May Day is all about. According to Wikipedia:

May Day falls exactly half a year from November 1, another cross-quarter day which is also associated with various northern European pagan and the year in the Northern hemisphere, and it has traditionally been an occasion for popular and often raucous celebrations.

May Day festivities at National Park Seminary in Maryland, 1907.

May Day Baskets are made and are usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someone's doorstep. The giver rings the bell and runs away. The person receiving the basket tries to catch the fleeing giver. If they catch the person, a kiss is exchanged.

Modern May Day ceremonies in the U.S. vary greatly from region to region.

May 1 is also recognized in the U.S. as Law Day.

May Day reminds me that summer is near. It has been a gloriously warm winter and spring so far!

The Gallery on 1st Celebrates 45 years in business in Montevideo

By Montevideo Chamber Girls

...

THE GALLERY ON 1ST
Celebrating 45 Years in Business

The Gallery on 1st started life as a vacant Union 76 station scheduled for demolition. Bob Christensen and Dennis Larson saw a potential diamond in the rough and renovated the building into a custom picture fram-ing shop, a barber and hairstyling salon and several small offices. Utilizing the office space, Bob and Dennis provided a privately owned small business incubator. Several tenants outgrew their offices, moved on and are still in business.
Eventually Bob assumed ownership of the building and grew his custom framing business into two more locations in neighboring towns. With the changes in the economy, he discontinued the other locations and decided to concentrate his efforts on Montevideo. The building was totally renovated in 2008. He moved the fitting area to the sales area on the main floor. This gives our customers the chance to see their fram-ing project as it is being completed. The main floor is also the home of Bob’s Olde Tyme Barber Shoppe and J Studio, a hairstyling and nail studio owned by Janice Phillips.
Bob turned the lower level into his mat cutting area and a complete woodworking shop. In this shop, he is able to mill specialized moulding, such as shadow boxes and display cases and shelves for certain jobs. This allows him to do jobs that many frame shops cannot.
Part-time employee, Ruth Walter does the engraving, fitting and needlework mounting.
Some of the services The Gallery on 1st offers are: complete conservation custom framing, engraved awards and trophies, specialty cabinet work and needle art framing. We are also able to do volume com-mercial framing. We did the majority of art work for the new Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital and we do awards yearly for Thomson Reuters, a company located on the East Coast.
Bob also has the distinction of operating the only Barber Shop in Montevideo. With all of the cosmetology shops in the area, Bob decided to go back to the old-fashioned Barber Shop. He caters to the guys who like clipper cuts done in a totally masculine atmosphere – and the shop is decorated in antique fishing and farm memorabilia.
Also, as a service to the Montevideo Chamber of Commerce, The Gallery on 1st has donated the framing for all of the 1st Dollar Awards that the Chamber gives to new businesses. In addition, every year we do-nate mat board pieces to the Montevideo School system and also custom framing to the Artist in Residence Program.

Congratulations to Bob and the Gallery on 1st!

Free and Easy Online Options For Your Business

By Montevideo Chamber Girls

GETTING ONLINE IS MORE IMPORTANT AND EASIER THAN EVER

First we had phone books. Then the Yellow Pages. And they’re still useful if you know exactly what you’re looking for. But nowadays most customers first go to the Internet to search for products and services. What’s more, if shoppers can’t find you online, they may simply overlook your business and go elsewhere.
Pew Research recently found that nearly 60 percent of all Americans and 78 percent of regular Internet users research products and services online before purchase. Pew Research also found that 92 percent of Americans use search engines at least occasionally. The numbers say it all: Your business absolutely needs a web presense so customers can find you.
This factsheet offers three ways you can get started putting your business online: (1) create a web presence using free and easy tools, (2) correct your business listings already on the Internet, and (3) connect with University of Minnesota Extension for free and affordable workshops and consultations.

LAUNCH A WEBSITE

Businesses that want an online presence typically build a website. In the past, this usually meant hiring a web designer or spending a lot of time learning software to do it yourself. Today, however, websites come in many forms, including some that are simple for a beginner to build. Here are a few “free and easy” options for creating a web presence.

Set up a basic website: Weebly

You can spend money to register your domain name and hire a company to host your website, but you can do those things for free with services like Weebly. This online tool also lets you easily construct your own basic website by dropping and dragging components into place.
Basic websites often serve as the main web presence for small businesses, providing information such as location, hours of operation, contact information, and brief descriptions of products and services. Most business websites have easy-to-remember dot-com domain names, such as www.mywebsite.com, and it’s a good idea to promote your website address in advertising and marketing materials. To get started with Weebly, sign up for an account at www.weebly.com and choose a template (a set format or “look”) into which you add your own content, including text, pictures, and video.

Use word-of-mouth advertising: Facebook Business Page

According to the “How Many Are There?” website, as of May 2011, more than 150 million Americans had a Facebook account that they used to keep in touch with family and friends, as well as “follow” famous people, favorite places and all kinds of things—including businesses.
As a result, many businesses have launched their own Facebook pages to connect with customers. The idea is to share deals, insights, or pose provocative questions that inspire followers to spread the word about your business to their network of family and friends on Facebook. This is old-fashioned word-of-mouth advertising, but online.
Facebook business pages have the same look and offer many of the same features as personal Facebook pages. Facebook offers business pages free of charge to companies.
If you start a business Facebook page, you will want to promote it in your marketing and advertising materials (including your website, if you have one). This way customers will start following you and receive notices of updates to your page on their personal Facebook pages. Features on Facebook also encourage existing followers to share your page with others. The process is similar to building and using a mailing list, although you get to interact more with your customers.
If you already have a personal Facebook page, you can simply add a business page to your account and can log in the same as you do now. If you are new to Facebook, you need to create an account. To get started, go to www.facebook.com/pages/create.php and follow the prompts.

Tell your story with an online journal: Blogs

A blog is short for “web log” and is an online journal, organized by day of entry. Some businesses use a blog for their primary website, especially businesses whose personal stories help sell their product. Other businesses use blogs to drive traffic to their basic website.
Like simple website programs, blog software is easy to use, maintain, and update. You can create a blog and start posting entries within minutes. You can also interact with customers via their comments on your blog. The challenging aspects of blogging are in content creation. First, you want to share interesting and/or valuable information so your readers will become customers. Second, you want to update information regularly and in a timely manner—even if it’s small changes. Otherwise, readers will think your blog is out of date and stop reading it.

There are two major free blog providers today:
1) Blogger at http://www.blogger.com and,
2) Wordpress at http://www.wordpress.com.
Each offers pre-designed templates or the ability to create a blog with your own look and feel. To get started, go to Blogger or Wordpress and follow the prompts to create an account and set up your blog page.

CORRECT EXISTING ONLINE LISTINGS

Many owners and operators are surprised to find that information about their business is already on the Internet even though they did not put it there. The Internet contains a vast array of information, and some aggregator or “people finder” services constantly scour the web and organize information from many sources on their websites. Don’t despair. This information is not out of your control. A few actions will put you in the driver’s seat.

Correct your business contact information: Business Aggregators

Business aggregators are websites that gather and post basic information about individual businesses in one place. Some of these aggregators may sound familiar to you: Merchant Circle, Manta, and Superpages. Whether you had contact with these organizations or not, they are using search engines to pull information, such as your phone number, address, and products, from other websites. Or they are buying databases with information about your business and posting it on their sites.

Aggregator websites can either serve your business well or scuttle it if customers find incorrect information. Most major aggregators allow you to “claim” your listing and make corrections for free. The challenge is to create and manage accounts for each aggregator.
Your first step is to find your business on aggregator sites and check your information for errors. Type the address of the aggregator into a web browser and search for your business by city and name:
After checking your information, click near where it typically reads “Are you the business owner?” and follow the screen prompts to claim and take control of your listing.

Get your location in the right place: Google Maps

Digital maps like Google Maps and Mapquest keep gaining in popularity as web designers integrate maps into mobile phone applications and basic websites. Travelers often punch keywords, such as “restaurant” or “food,” into a map on their phone to find their way in an unfamiliar community. As with business aggregators, too often the information they find is incorrect, including the location of the business itself. Maps on a phone or in a GPS unit can direct customers miles away or to a dead end street, a frustrtating process which is not a favorable first impression any business wants to make.
Google Maps stands today as both the most popular and influential digital map, so turn your attention to it first. As with aggregators, your first order of business is checking whether your information is correct or not. Go to www.maps.google.com and search for your business. Once there, click on “Business owner?” and follow the prompts to claim your listing and make any corrections. Once claimed, you can also add pictures, website addresses, and even digital coupons to your listing to make it stand out in the crowd.

FREE AND AFFORDABLE RESOURCES FOR COMMUNITIES

Montevideo Retail Group Get-together

By Montevideo Chamber Girls

A group of eight met last night for the Montevideo Chamber's Retail Group meeting. These individuals all come together for the purpose of creating local events and promotions that encourage shopping locally and bringing business to our community.  These are the events that the retail committee is currently working on:

- Easter EGG-Citement- Scheduled for April 7th at Windom Park in Montevideo. Kids of all ages are invited to participate in this yearly Easter Egg Hunt in which they receive candy and local business coupons (that the parents will like also).

-Crazy Monte Days- This will be the 4th year of our Crazy Days street fair in Montevideo. This year we will continue to have fun activities for kids and many shopping bargains for all!

- Trick or Treat Street is scheduled for Wednesday, October 31st. Kid's will have the opportunity to go from business to business and get candy in this fun and safe event.

- Holiday Promotions- Shop Montevideo and Win Big will be back again in 2012. Customers who shop at Montevideo businesses have the opportunity to win money back when they bring their receipts into the Chamber Office and enter them into weekly prize drawings.

- Red Dot Sales- The first Thursday of each month retail stores offer special 'Red Dot Sales' to customers searching for a bargain!

The group also brainstormed new ideas and improving the existing events. They are always looking for volunteers to help out with events. Many hands definitely make for light work!

If you would like more information on becoming a part of the retail committee or would like to volunteer at events please email us at generalinfo@montechamber.com or call 320-269-5527.

It's your community. Shop Local.

Meet the Chamber Girls...

By Montevideo Chamber Girls

Angie Steinbach and Holly Sherod

Angie Steinbach is originally from Hills, Minnesota. She grew up on her families farm in which they farmed soybeans and corn. Some of her foundest memories of growing up was learning to drive tractor and spending many summers 'picking beans'. Her family still lives in the Hills area and she also has a brother and his family in Worland, Wyoming. Angie's husband is currently serving in Kuwait with his National Guard Unit.

Angie has her Business Administration degree from Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. She has worked in the healthcare field before her work at the Chamber of Commerce. Her plans for the future include going back to school for her Masters Degree in Business Administration.

Holly Sherod grew up in Hanley Falls, Minnesota. Her family farms corn and soybeans in the Hanley Falls area. Holly has many great memories of growing up in rural Minnesota that include community softball leagues and town gatherings. Holly's favorite family member is her son, Mason. He is turning four years old in February. Some of their favorite things to do together are going on walks in warm months and playing the Wii together when temperatures are a bit colder.

Holly has her Medical Administrative Assistant Degree from Minnesota West Community and Technical College of Granite Falls. She worked in the healthcare field prior to her work at the Montevideo Chamber of Commerce.
