Greg Holmstrom, court appointed public defense attorney for Darek Jon Nelson, has requested a Rule 20 Evaluation for his client to determine if Nelson is competent to proceed to trial and be able to assist with his own defense.

Nelson, a 24-year-old Montevideo man, is in custody at Chippewa County Jail in Montevideo on $750,000 unconditional bail, facing charges for the Jan. 13 fatal assault of Vinessa Lozano, 18, of Montevideo.

Holmstrom, Chippewa County Attorney Dave Gilbertson, District Judge Dwayne Knutsen and William Klumpp Jr., Minnesota assistant attorney general, met on Monday for a scheduling conference.
