Fall 2010 brings new looks and fresh styles for home interiors. Natural products and green items are all the rage, making way for an exciting variety of trends sure to turn up the style in your humble abode.
Color my world
Warm with bold accents is the name of the game this year.
“The ‘in’ colors are earthy and worldly,” says interior designer Jodi L. Heifner-DiVietro, owner of JL Design Group in Oswego, Ill. “The whole green movement has really caught on and is now part of how we live.”
She says beiges, greens and yellows all have a place on this year’s paint palette. “Not the sages of the ‘90s, though,” she says. “Go for mossy or even lime greens.”
“Worldly” means bright splashes of color.
“The burnt oranges, bright reds and yellows of nature are big this year,” she says. “But I think the hottest color will be teal, used as an accent.”
Furniture fashion
When it comes to furniture, expect the focus to shift from the streamlined style of recent years in favor of more traditional pieces like wing-back chairs and overstuffed couches with rolled arms.
“I see movement toward the softness that was missing from the contemporary age,” Heifner-DiVietro says, who advises that earthiness is important in terms of fabric choices as well; eco-friendly fabrics are a favorite selection of clients.
It’s all about accessories
“Your accessories should tell the story of who you are and where you’ve been, rather than be a collection of items with no relationship to each other,” says Marissa Iacovetta, principal at Reflections Interior Design in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. “Sometimes it’s a matter of arranging items in a way that will help create rhythm in the room.”
Iacovetta advises clients that accessories are a way to bring the space together and should be the last things worked into a design.
Consider bringing in pieces that boast your chosen accent color and are representative of your tastes.
“There’s a trend toward an urban country look,” Iacovetta says. Get this look by adding leather or grass items, which can be found in everything from rugs to pillows.
Hip on a budget
Keeping walls and furniture neutral and just adjusting accessories is a great way to freshen up a look.
“Switching out pillows, throws and even artwork is much less expensive,” says Heifner-DiVietro, who also advises clients to avoid getting too trendy with major purchases.
