Monday night the Watson City Council called two special meetings to discuss and resolve the zoning dispute with Aziz Ansari by complying with the court settlement made earlier this month.

Summer vacation came to an end with a flurry of activity this week at the new kindergarten classroom at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The room, located in the Christian Growth Center at the church, has been under construction since early July in preparation for the 14 children who are registered.
Saying is was “time to move forward,” City Manager Steve Jones advised members of the Montevideo City Council to set a public hearing to reconsider a conditional use permit (CUP) to allow Farmer’s Union Oil Co. of Montevideo to place three anhydrous ammonia storage tanks at a site adjacent to the Cenex propane facility in Smith Addition.
A suspected tornado caused moderate damage late last Thursday night at the farm of Steve and Diane Ketelsen 5 miles southwest of Montevideo. Several large trees in the Ketelsens’ grove were snapped off or blown over, a garage was knocked off its foundation (above), and a grain dryer was blown off its footings. There was no damage to the Ketelsens’ house. According to the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen, a line of strong thunderstorms packing heavy rain and winds gusting to 40 mph raced through the Montevideo area late Thursday night, beginning at approximately 11:34 p.m. Just over an inch of rain had fallen by the time the storms passed on to the east by 2 a.m. Friday. The Montevideo School Board had a lot to discuss at a special meeting Monday night as members worked to finalize a list of new belief statements and set related goals for the district, review policy changes for the upcoming school year, and discuss contract negotiations with office personnel, educational assistants, and administrators.
Early this month there was an emergency with Montevideo’s water system that most people probably never even noticed. At 6:50 on the morning of Aug. 6, an alarm sounded in the water plant.
Emma Johnson, a freshman at Montevideo Senior High School, is the new queen of the Minnesota Valley Antique Farm Power and Machinery Association Threshing Show. She is driving a 1936 J.I. Case RC tractor that was donated to the association by the Donald Hendrickson family. With Johnson is association member Steve Coon of Montevideo. Tuesday afternoon 11 citizens from Granite Falls Township silently filed out of the Chippewa County Commissioners meeting following a unanimous vote by the commissioners to approve a controversial Conditional Use Permit for the Asbury asphalt cement storage tank facility.
Filing for local elections closed Tuesday across Minnesota, setting the stage for the Nov. 2 general election.
On Friday afternoon, James and Loisjean Fossen, of Watson, were traveling down Highway 23 in their RV on their way to Lake Shetek for a camping trip. In their RV were their godson’s two children and their Pomeranian dog. In front of them on the highway was another RV with their godson Chris Dornbusch (also of Watson), his wife, Connie, and their daughter along with a friend.
Although the number of farms in Minnesota continues to decline, agriculture remains second only to manufacturing as the state’s leading industry.
With most of its summer building and repair projects complete, the Montevideo School District is nearly prepared for the new school year. Projects include the installation of a new phone system, a card access system, and upkeep repairs on the existing school buildings.

Members of the Minnesota Valley Antique Farm Power & Machinery Association are preparing for the upcoming 30th annual threshing show at Heritage Hill 4 miles east of Montevideo on Highway 7. Robert Kellen (on tractor) and Orlynn Hegna (on binder) are seen cutting and binding oats July 23 in preparation for the show. This year’s show will feature J.I. Case tractors and equipment. There will be food, music and entertainment, as well as a tractor parade all three days, a flea market, a tractor pull, and the crowning of a new Threshing Queen. With the city of Watson losing full-time utility employee Mark Radtke, overtures have been made to Montevideo city officials regarding supplying utility services.
Four months after the more than 550 soldiers from the Minnesota Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 151st Field Artillery set foot back on American soil after a year-long deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the troops will officially be treated to a homecoming bash at the Training and Community Center tomorrow (Friday).
